Donald "Unprecedented" Trump v. American Democracy
A Criminal Conspiracy to End the American Experiment in Self-Government
“Unprecedented.”
It’s a greatly overused word, but it should be Donald Trump’s middle name. What he has done to bring our nation’s experiment in democracy to the brink of collapse has only one precedent in American history: the Enslavers’ Rebellion (more commonly, but less accurately, called the Civil War), but that was not the act of a particular person.
Given his ability to get millions of people in his cult to believe anything, no matter how ridiculous and contrary to fact, that he says, there can be no serious question that Donald Trump is the most dangerous man in American history.
Now we can see why it was taking Fani Willis so long. The criminal conspiracy charged by a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, last night includes Trump and 18 other charged conspirators and refers to 30 unindicted co-conspirators, indicating a large number of people who were on the inside and will provide evidence against Trump and the others charged.
The indictment includes 41 counts and alleges 161 criminal acts:
Defendant Donald John Trump lost the United States presidential election held on November 3, 2020. One of the states he lost was Georgia. Trump and the other Defendants charged in this Indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump. That conspiracy contained a common plan and purpose to commit two or more acts of racketeering activity in Fulton County, Georgia, elsewhere in the State of Georgia, and in other states.
THE ENTERPRISE
At all times relevant to this Count of the Indictment, the Defendants, as well as others not named as defendants, unlawfully conspired and endeavored to conduct and participate in a criminal enterprise in Fulton County, Georgia, and elsewhere. …
[It] constituted a criminal organization whose members and associates engaged in various related criminal activities including, but not limited to, false statements and writings, impersonating a public officer, forgery, filing false documents, influencing witnesses, computer theft, computer trespass, computer invasion of privacy, conspiracy to defraud the state, acts involving theft, and perjury.
…
Donald Trump has been a shameless liar, cheat and bully and operated in the mode of a mob boss throughout his adult life. Now, at long last, he is being charged as one.
It is a sad, but hopeful day for the United States of America.
