There have been more-or-less openly pro-Hamas demonstrations in Germany and Austria. But who was organizing them has been kind of sketchy in the news reports. It sounds like those were probably Islamist groups of some kind. And those tend to be rightwing in their politics. But there has been a lot of handwringing among commentators about "the left" being involved.

Germany and Austria were both quick to express unconditional support for Israel, which is in line with their general policy. Though Netanyahu’s "Amalek" speech surely must have made their officials' hair stand on end! The governments seem to be following the US lead, for better or worse.

This Israel-Gaza war brings up a dilemma for the radical right groups here. Because when it comes to their approach to politics and governance, they're pretty much on the same page as Netanyahu and his fans. But the radical right in Germany and Austria have, well, "a history" with Jews. So how to spin the war is tricky for them.

But they also have xenophobia and Islamophobia! And the xenophobes started immediately complaining that the pro-Palestinian demos represented "imported anti-Semitism" by Muslims, immigrants and refugees. Because, you know, countries like Germany, Austria, France and Italy don't have any *native-grown* anti-Semitism to worry about! (Big eyeroll.)

The far-right parties for years have been using the concept of: Muslims hate women, and we hate Muslims, so that means we support women's rights! (They don't.)

Now they can adapt it to: Muslims hate Jews, and we hate Muslims, so that means we can't possibly be anti-Semitic! (They are.)

Lots of weird groups can pass as part of "the left" in Germany. I just learned about a thankfully obscure German trend called the "Anti-German Communists," But they aren't communist or even "left" in any recognizable sense. They are a hardcore Islamophobic group who see Israel like American Christian Zionists do, as a bunch of white people defending civilization against the dark-skinned Muslim barbarians. "Politics makes strange bedfellows" hardly begins to describe that sort of weirdness!

Excellent essay. I didn’t know that about Hawley. Even dumber than what I was writing at that age.
